If you are thinking of buying one, the 2.5 L V6  is generally regarded as the best of the Cougar bunch with excellent levels of spec and great performance from its V6 engine, but beware some Cougars have fallen into the hands of boy racers, so look for signs of accident damage and engine wear!

I have had my Cougar for three months now, and had no problems. It has the 2.5 L Duratec V6 lump, which when I mention this to my friends, they say ‘I bet that drinks fuel’ which to be thoughtful it doesn’t. It does 25/30 mpg, which is pretty good, but there again it depends how you drive it. Although the fuel mpg is quite good, the service prices are far from it, a 12000 mile services is about the £250 mark from Ford, but a major services is much more, my one is due for it’s 10 years major service which means, a cam belt change as well, which will cost around £650!

The thing that did nearly make me faint was the price of the spark plugs being changed £140!  This being due it having to take part of the manifold off to get to the back two plugs.

The build quality is very good for a Ford,  the  Cougar is  built in Michigan, United States, Although  European models were finished in Ford's Köln plant in Germany where the cars had European spec lighting installed, Ford badges applied and in the case of UK cars, converted to Right Hand Drive, in the US it had different branding; in this case being branded as the Mercury Cougar while in Europe it was known as the Ford Cougar, but whistle the large percentage of Cougar’s in the UK are Ford model’s,  some Mercury model’s have made it across the pond.
